Biography
Phantasm

Phantasm, founded by Laurence Dreyfus in 1994, is a consort dedicated to music for viols from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The group's repertoire includes the eloquent fantasies of the English consort tradition, the masterworks of Marais and Couperin, and a new arrangement of J.S. Bach's Art of Fugue. Phantasm has recorded music by Byrd, Gibbons, Mico, Marais and Couperin for BBC Radio 3 and has appeared in festivals in London, Stour, Amsterdam, Oslo and Skálholt, Iceland. The group made its New York debut at the Frick Collection in 1996.

Laurence Dreyfus is the Founder and Musical Director of the group.

Wendy Gillespie

Wendy Gillespie is regarded as one of the leading players of bowed string instruments of the middle ages, Renaissance and baroque periods. She has played with many leading ensembles from the New York Pro Musica to Ensemble Sequentia, and his a founding member of the viol consorts Les Filles de Sainte-Colombe and Fretwork. Wendy Gillespie has participated in more then 40 recordings on such labels as Virgin Classics, Harmonia Mundi, Columbia and Dorian, and has performed in concert and on television and radio all over the world. She currently teaches a wide variety of subjects in the Early Music Institute Indiana University.

Jonathan Manson

Jonathan Manson was born in Edinburgh and received his formative training at the International Cello Centre in Scotland under the direction of Jane Cowan, and was later taught by Steven Isserlis and David Waterman in London and by Steven Doane at the Eastman School of Music. While in America, Jonathan Manson become involved with the performance of early music and from there went to The Hague to study viola da gamba with Wieland Kuijken. As a period instrument performer, Jonathan Manson plays and records regularly with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and has appeared with Laurence Dreyfus in duo recitals at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, at the Oslo Chamber Music Festival and at Stour Early Music. He has made discs of music by Byrd and Locke for Meridian with the viol consort Concordia and is a member of the Manson String Trio.

Markku Luolajan-Mikkola

Markku Luolajan-Mikkola studied cello with Arto Noras at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, which awarded him its diploma in 1983. An interest in baroque music led him to a summer course in Norway with Laurence Dreyfus and later to Holland where he studied viola da gamba with Wieland Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and received postgraduate diplomas in viola de gamba and baroque cello. Markku Luolajan-Mikkola has taught cello at the Sibelius Academy and is presently active as a chamber musician in several European ensembles. His recording of Marais' Suite d'un goût d'Etranger on ALBA records won a national award for excellence in his native Finland.
