Douglas Boyd

Conductor and oboist

Douglas Boyd was born in Glasgow. He studied with Janet Craxton at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he is now a professor, and with Maurice Bourgue in Paris. He was one of the founders of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and has been, since its inception, its principal oboist.

Douglas Boyd now enjoys an international career and frequently appears as a soloist with many distinguished orchestras and conductors. Recent engagements have included a concerto with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, a début with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, performances of Bernd Alois Zimmerman's Oboe Concerto with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and a European tour of Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Wind with Andras Schiff. He has also appeared as a soloist with conductors such as Claudio Abbado and Sir Roger Norrington.

Recent engagements have included a tour of Switzerland as a soloist with the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Ivan Fischer, a recital tour of the United States and concerto appearances with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

Other highlights include a Bach Concerti series with the Manchester Camerata, performances of Strauss' Oboe Concerto with the London Mozart Players, and his début with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Mr Boyd is also a committed chamber musician and regularly takes part in international festivals, including the Berlin, Edinburgh and Salzburg festivals.

For Deutsche Grammophon Douglas Boyd has recorded a Schumann recital with the pianist Maria Joao Pires, a CD of Bach Concerti and Ligeti's Concerto for Flute and Oboe with the COE, under Claudio Abbado. He has also recorded the Trio Sonatas of the revolutionary Baroque composer Zelenka for Claves and the Strauss Concerti for ASV. Gramophone Magazine described his recordings of the Bach and Strauss Concerti as the finest recordings of these works.

Boyd's recording of the Bach Concerti marked his recording début as director/soloist and since 1996 he has been developing a parallel conducting career. He has conducted the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and replaced Sir Charles Mackerras in two Strauss concerts, one of which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3's 'Sounding the Century' series. He has since received invitations from the Manchester Camerata, the City of London Sinfonia and the Orchestre National de Lyon. He recently made a return visit to the Upsalla Chamber Orchestra as well as making his début with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Highlights of the 2000-2001 season include a re-invitation to conduct the City of London Sinfonia and his US conducting début at the Mainly Mozart Festival. Future engagements include a re-invitation to conduct the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in their International series.

Douglas Boyd has a particularly close association with the Manchester Camerata. In the 2000-2001 season he is conducting a three-programme series, and will become their Principal Conductor from next season. Future plans include a major European tour in 2002.

He is also committed to working with students and regularly conducts the orchestra of the Guildhall School of Music, and the orchestras of Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He is also engaged to conduct the orchestra of the Royal College of Music in London.
