(Born; Rome, 10 Nov 1916). Italian composer. He studied with Pizzetti in Rome, where from 1941 he taught at the conservatory. In 1970 he became director of the Accademia di S Cecilia. He is also a music critic and essayist. His works include the opera Il buon soldato Svejk (1962), orchestral, vocal and chamber pieces, drawing circumspectly on mid-century masters (Hindemith, Bartók, Petrassi).
