Musical Style Categorisation SethHelstrip
Fri Jul 28 2000 13:44
I'm hoping that someone reading this has more knowledge about music than I do.

I'm a computer scientist, currently working on a connectionist model to classify musical styles. What I really need to know is what people think makes certain pieces belong to certain stylistic classifications.

For example, exactly what is it that makes a classical piece, classical.

The categories I'm trying to define at the moment are classical, jazz, rock, and popular. Obviously quite contrasting in makeup.

If anyone reading this has any feelings on the subject I would be more than grateful if you could let me know you own particular views. Or if you know of any source of information that could be useful to me, I would be very grateful.

Many Thanks,

Seth Helstrip

Your question casts a wide net. Perhaps you could explain the concept of Connectionist Modeling. I would like to learn more about this.
