A few years ago I had the pleasure of hearing James Levine conduct members of the Met orchestra in the chamber version in a small church. It was wonderful. Richard Kapp's recording on his Essay label is fabulous.
Less is more in some cases, like in Strauss` "Metamorphosen" for string septet, and in Schönbergs "Verklärte Nacht" for string sextet. The intimacy of these chamber versions (written by the composer himself, of course), is something special, and the lines in the music are clearer, when played by solo instruments.
