Isaac Stern dies carmel
Tue Sep 25 2001 22:17
Thank you for the knowledgeable obituary of Isaac Stern....he seemed to be beloved everywhere he went and here - in Israel - he is PARTICULARLY remembered for NOT putting on a gas mask when there was a siren warning in a concert and most of the audience donned their masks.....HE just went on playing.....a very, very special man....

Can I just pop in an obvious statement which seems to me to sometimes get overlooked when talking about Stern's many qualities as a person and that is what a marvellous musician he was. To me his Tchaikovsky is only equalled by Oistrakh and I wouldn't want to be without either. As a chamber musician he was also in a league of his own - a man who used his considerable charisma to illuminate not occlude the music he played. I think the marvellous crop of young American fiddlers now emerging will be a fitting tribute to his influence.
