Ill-starred pieces Julian Thake
Fri Apr 20 2001 19:50
Was just listening to a positively oleaginous performance, reminding me of nothing so much as sticky rice in your favourite Chinese restaurant, of the slow movement from Piano Concerto no.19 by Mozart, which in the end I could stand no more and had to turn off. Looked it up on the radio station's playlist (Classic fm for UK forum members) and it was Martha Argerich with a scrawny Italian orchestra on Teldec - avoid like the plague, everybody. Two or three years ago I had to smile through gritted teeth - enjoying the music, but oh! the playing - when a kind host in the States once tuned to a live broadcast of a very technically hit-and-miss performance by Paul Badura-Skoda for me. Does anyone else have a piece they hardly ever seem to hear a good performance of?

Mahler's 5th; Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony; Scheherezade; I'm sure I can think of lots more but that'll do for starters.
