After receiving around $8 million in funding and grants from the South Australian government, the Adelaide Festival 2002 has ended on a sour note with poor audience attendance and subsequent box office takings of only $1 million.
The ill-starred festival had been beset by problems in the run-up to this year's event. Controversial Artistic Director, Peter Sellars claimed he was ousted and that international audiences may have stayed away after his removal.
It seems that the Australian public were less than enthusiastic by Sellars's vision despite a plea by the Australia Council for support. Audiences figures slumped by almost two-thirds compared to 2001, most notably in the festival's centerpiece attraction - a concert version of John Adams's opera El Nino.
