NY Opera could move in $1.2bn Lincoln Center plan
The long-awaited master plan for the renovation of New York's famous Lincoln Center will not include a new home for the City Opera on campus, it was reported this week.

The New York Times said the $1.2 billion redevelopment plan had ruled out a new home for the Opera in Damrosch Park or elsewhere on the Lincoln Center campus but had allocated $240 million for a 2,200-seat opera house if a site can be found elsewhere.

If the City Opera stays put, the newspaper reports, the plan calls for spending up to $87 million at the New York State Theater, which is shared with the New York City Ballet, to improve its operatic acoustics.

Marshall Rose, the departing chairman of the redevelopment project, said that the 11 members of a Lincoln Center constituent committee, made up of organizations such as the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet and the City Opera, had "unanimously agreed" to submit the preliminary plan to the city by the end of the week.

However, decision-making process is known to have been fraught with argument, with some elements still in dispute and likely to change or be vetoed by any one of the partner organizations involved.

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani is understood to believe that the Lincoln Center project and other plans central to the city's status as a cultural capital "should be encouraged."

The biggest single project in the plans is the reconstruction of Avery Fisher Hall.
