Biography
Peter Donohoe

British pianist Peter Donohoe is internationally renowned and admired as an artist of technical briliance, musical profundity and intellectual erudition. A romantic and highly charged player, he has a remarkably wide repertoire of solo, chamber and concerto works, and has been acclaimed for his mastery of works by composers as diverse as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Messiaen and Muldowney.

Born in 1953, Peter Donohoe was educated at Chethams Music School in Manchester and pursued advanced studies at Leeds University and then the Royal Northern College of Music. Already immensely demanding of himself, despite winning the Liszt-Bartók Competition in Budapest in 1976 he decided to devote yet more time to studying and worked with Messiaen and his wife Yvonne Loriod in Paris. In 1979 he made a great impression with his debut at the BBC Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, where he has appeared each year since. Three years later in 1982 he shot to world fame when he was the joint winner of the coveted International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

Peter Donohoe is greatly in demand as a recital and concerto player in Continental Europe (including Britain), the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and Russia. His music making has particularly impressed by the power, depth of tone and range of colours he can draw from the piano with his brilliant technical dexterity which serves him right across his very broad repertoire spectrum. This can be heard in his recordings which include some of the most highly praised piano discs of recent times. Amongst the most acclaimed have been the complete works for Piano and Orchestra by Tchaikovsky, with conductor Rudolf Barshai, with a Grammy award for the 2nd Concerto; three movements from Petrushka by Stravinsky - and Peter Donohoe also plays the solo piano in Simon Rattle's recording of the complete ballet with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; Prokofiev's 6th Sonata; Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto, with the same composer's Etudes Tableaux and Preludes; Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue; and the piano concerto by Dominic Muldowney.

In recent years Peter Donohoe has developed a parallel career as a conductor and has won successes with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and Moscow Chamber Orchestra.

Peter Donohoe also enjoys playing duets with his favorite colleagues, notably Martin Roscoe and also Elaine Burns, his wife. With her and their daughter he lives in a new home of great beauty which he has himself designed, in a location of rural richness in Britain's Midlands.
