Contemporary Piano Ensemble
Biography
At this JVC New York Jazz Festival, the Contemporary Piano Ensemble
performed a Tribute to one of the most technically skilled and brilliant
pianists in jazz during his prime, Phineas Newborn, Jr. Mr. Newborn,
1931-1989, never really gained the acceptance and praise due him because of
his many absences from the Jazz scene, yet he was readily considered to be
in the same league with Art Tatum and Bud Powell, always playing with great
inspiration and animation. Spending most of his time in Memphis, he was
an inspiration to many younger pianists including James Williams, Harold
Mabern, Mulgrew Miller, Donald Brown and Geoff Keezer, who after Newborn's
death would dedicate their work as the Contemporary Piano Ensemble to
Phineas.
