Berceuse in D Flat Major Op.57
Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849)
Berceuse in D Flat Major Op.57
Chopin's Berceuse (basically a lullaby) is quite the most remarkable piece of its kind. Over a constant, softly rocking motion on the left hand Chopin spins the most wonderful webs of sound around a simple, unaffected melody. These little variations increase in complexity as the piece progresses, but the dynamic remains ever quiet and restful. As a whole, the piece sounds very much like an improvisation, and it almost certainly started life as such.
