With the BBC Proms season just announced, GMN artists once again provide some of the major spectacles and most interesting music-making of the BBC’s traditional international summer jamboree.
Valery Gergiev, Sir Roger Norrington, David Wilson-Johnson and Alexander Toradze are among the GMN family luminaries taking part in this year’s festival which will re-instate the traditional pomp and shenanigans of the Last Night.
Last year’s final evening’s celebrations were suitably altered in the wake of the tragic events of 11 September, the hi-jinks being replaced by a memorial concert featuring Barber’s ‘Adagio’ and the finale to Beethoven’s ninth symphony which calls for universal brotherhood.
Highlights of the season include Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra and Chorus in two Russian masterpieces: Mussorgsky’s ‘Boris Godunov’ and Sofia Gubaidulina’s ‘St John Passion’. Sir Roger Norrington and the Camerata Salzburg with guest soloist Joshua Bell play Mozart and Beethoven and the Orchestra of the age of Enlightenment accompany in Haydn’s ‘Creation’ and two short operas by Oliver Knussen.
